Susan was born in Akron, Ohio on January 28, 1952 to Patricia and Clyde Dye. She attended St. Sebastian parish and grade school. After graduating from Buchtel High School, she obtained an associate degree in Administrative Assistance and Secretarial Science at the University of Akron. While earning her degree, she began working in the Career Placement Office as a secretary, a position she held for over 30 years. At the age of 24 she married Thomas Lavery and began her vocation as a mother. She raised five children and worked diligently to impart to them a love for the Catholic Faith.
Though she continued to work at the university to support the family, her true focus in life was being a devoted mother to her children. After returning from a full day of work, she tirelessly carried out her duties as a mother at home. Even in the workplace she was loved by many for her motherly instincts in helping the students.
After her own children had grown, she continued still in helping to raise her grandchildren, deriving delight in all things with them and many of the parish school children, supporting them in fundraisers and regularly providing tuition for children to attend church summer camps.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas, and their children: Mary (Travis), Fr. Gabriel, Marjory, John, and Kathleen as well as nine grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Thomas (Mary), Philip (Susan), Mary (Jack), Janet (John), Judith (Mike), Cathy (Jerry), and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Patricia and Clyde Dye and her brother William “Bill.”
A rosary and Requiem Mass were offered at her parish, Immaculate Conception Church, in Norwood, Ohio; the Mass was sung by the school children. The funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Akron, Ohio at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 23. Visitation will be held at the church in Akron from 9:30 to10:30 a.m. A rosary will be prayed at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Holy CrossCemetery in Akron after the funeral Mass.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made (in memoriam Susan Lavery) to St. Thomas Aquinas Summer Camp, 2310 Robertson Ave., Norwood, Ohio 45212. Please make checks payable to St. Thomas Aquinas Foundation.
